Usage Note

gewiß (now spelled gewiss after the 1996 reform) means certain or sure, but it also works as an adverb meaning 'certainly': Das ist gewiss richtig. As an attributive adjective it can soften to 'a certain', as in ein gewisser Herr Müller ('a certain Mr Müller').
