Usage Note
Erststimme is the first of two ballots cast in German federal and state elections. It elects a candidate directly in a Wahlkreis (constituency). The winner takes a Direktmandat. Contrast with Zweitstimme, the proportional list vote that determines the overall party composition of parliament.
