Usage Note

Eiszapfen is masculine (der Eiszapfen). Icicles form when meltwater from snow on roofs refreezes; large Eiszapfen can be hazardous and must be knocked down from eaves (Dachtraufen). The word is also used colloquially for very cold hands or feet.
