Usage Note
überrennen in sports means to outpace or overwhelm an opponent: die gegnerische Abwehr überrennen (overrun the opposing defence). The inseparable prefix über- gives the sense of going over or past. In military usage it means to overrun a position, which is the origin of the sports metaphor.
