Usage Note

Umso functions as the second element of correlative comparatives, interchangeable with desto: je mehr … umso besser ('the more … the better'). It can also stand alone as an intensifier: umso besser! ('all the better!'). Very common in conversational and written German.

"Je früher du anfängst, umso leichter wird es dir fallen."

Natural Translation

The earlier you start, the easier it will be for you.

Literal Translation

The earlier you start, all-the more easily will it you fall.
