doch

yet

adverb particle DOKH Common

Also means

after all

Usage Note

doch is a hard-working German particle with no single English match. As a flavouring word it adds insistence or surprise (Komm doch mit! 'Do come along!'), and as a standalone reply it contradicts a negative question, meaning 'yes I do' or 'on the contrary'. Learners should treasure this last use: it answers Magst du das nicht? with a confident Doch!

Examples

"Du kommst doch mit, oder?"

Natural Translation

You're coming along, aren't you?

Literal Translation

You come yet along, or?
