Usage Note

Sittsam describes behaviour conforming to conventions of moral decorum and modesty. Sittsam gekleidet — modestly dressed. It is slightly old-fashioned and can be used with gentle irony today. In traditional contexts it implies virtue and propriety; it was especially applied to women's behaviour historically.
