sehnsüchtig describes a deep, melancholic longing for something absent — a place, a person, or a past time. From Sehnsucht (longing, yearning), one of the great untranslatable German emotional concepts. Used in literature and everyday speech: sehnsüchtig warten — to wait with longing.
