Usage Note
schmecken describes how food tastes and, crucially, whether someone likes it: das schmeckt mir literally means 'that tastes to me', i.e. 'I find it delicious'. The person enjoying it takes the dative, not the subject slot as in English.
Examples
"Der Kuchen schmeckt sehr gut."
Natural Translation
The cake tastes very good.
