nur

only

adverb NOOR Common

Also means

just

Usage Note

nur restricts whatever it precedes to 'only, merely'. As a modal particle in commands it softens or intensifies a wish, as in Komm nur! ('Do come!') or Wenn er nur käme ('If only he'd come'). Position changes the focus, so nur ich ('only I') differs from ich nur.

Examples

"Ich habe nur zehn Euro."

Natural Translation

I only have ten euros.

Literal Translation

I have only ten euros.
