nah describes physical or emotional closeness and often appears as in der Nähe ('nearby') or naheliegend ('obvious, close at hand'). The comparative is the irregular näher, and jemandem nahestehen means to be close to someone. Don't confuse it with the adverb nahezu ('almost').
