Usage Note

fermentieren is the process of preserving food through microbial action — producing lactic acid (Milchsäure) in vegetables like Sauerkraut and Kimchi, or alcohol in brewing. The home-fermentation trend (Fermentier-Trend) has been growing in Germany since around 2015; fermentiertes Gemüse is now sold in organic supermarkets.
