Usage Note

bescheiden praises modesty in people and means 'modest' of amounts: ein bescheidenes Einkommen. Colloquially it can ironically mean 'lousy': Das Wetter ist ziemlich bescheiden. The opposite of the virtue is anmaßend (presumptuous).
