Usage Note
aus takes the dative and marks coming out of an enclosed space or one's origin (aus Deutschland, aus Holz 'made of wood'). As a separable prefix and adverb it also means 'off' or 'finished', as in das Licht ist aus ('the light is off'). Contrast with von for a mere starting point.
