Usage Note
Sperrklausel is the legal minimum vote share a party must reach to enter parliament; in Germany this is 5% (Fünfprozenthürde) or three direct mandates, meant to prevent extreme parliamentary fragmentation.
Examples
"Die Partei scheiterte an der Sperrklausel und zog nicht in den Bundestag ein."
Natural Translation
The party failed to clear the threshold clause and did not enter the Bundestag.
Literal Translation
The party failed at the threshold clause and did not move into the Bundestag.
