Usage Note
Schrecken is the sharp, sudden fright or horror at something alarming. Jmdm einen Schrecken einjagen (to give someone a fright) is colloquial; mit dem Schrecken davonkommen (to get away with just a fright — i.e. escape unharmed) is an idiom.
