Parteidisziplin
party discipline, compliance with the party line
noun par-TYE-dis-tsi-pleen Rare
Usage Note
Parteidisziplin refers to the expectation that elected members vote in line with their party's position. German constitutional law formally frees MPs from Fraktionszwang (being bound by the group), but in practice Parteidisziplin is strong. The two terms are often discussed together.
Examples
"Einige Abgeordnete durchbrachen die Parteidisziplin und stimmten gegen den Antrag."
Natural Translation
Some MPs broke party discipline and voted against the motion.
Literal Translation
Some members-of-parliament broke the party-discipline and voted against the motion.
