Usage Note
Oberbürgermeister is the head of a large city's administration, literally an 'upper' or chief Bürgermeister (mayor). Smaller towns just have a Bürgermeister; the prefix Ober- marks the senior rank. It is often abbreviated to OB in news headlines.
