Förderung is financial support or sponsorship, from fördern ('to promote, to fund'), and it dominates talk of grants and subsidies. In mining it also means the extraction or output of raw materials (Kohleförderung). Do not confuse it with Forderung, without the umlaut, which means a 'demand'.
