Eibe

yew tree

noun EY-be Rare

Usage Note

Eibe (Taxus baccata) is one of the oldest European trees, capable of living for thousands of years. Almost all parts are highly toxic (giftig) — except the red berry flesh. It is common in churchyards and hedges, and its dense, springy wood was historically used for longbows.

Examples

"Die Beeren der Eibe sind zwar giftig, aber optisch sehr dekorativ."

Natural Translation

The berries of the yew are toxic but visually very decorative.

Literal Translation

The berries of the yew are indeed toxic, but visually very decorative.
