Usage Note
Anstoß is the kick-off that starts a football match or a new half, distinct from Anpfiff (the referee's whistle). It also means an impetus or trigger: den Anstoß für eine Debatte geben (give the impulse for a debate). The verb is anstoßen (to kick off; to clink glasses).
