Usage Note
vor is a two-way preposition: dative for position ('in front of, before') and accusative for motion toward. With time it means 'ago' (vor einer Woche) and with the dative it marks a cause of emotion, as in vor Angst zittern ('to tremble with fear'). As a separable prefix vor- often adds the sense of 'forward' or 'pre-'.
