Usage Note

schwatzen describes idle, gossipy chatter — talking a lot without saying much of importance. It can be used for casual chatting or for disapproved gossip. 'Schwatz nicht so viel!' (Stop chattering so much!). More southern and slightly old-fashioned than quatschen.
