Usage Note

rösten means to dry-roast ingredients — nuts, spices, or bread — in a pan or oven without oil (or with very little), to develop colour and aroma. Geröstete Mandeln (toasted almonds) and geröstete Brotwürfel (croutons) are typical; the related noun is Rösti (Swiss potato cake).
