Usage Note

freiberuflich describes work carried out independently without an employment contract, especially in the so-called freie Berufe (liberal professions: doctors, lawyers, artists, etc.). Unlike gewerblich (commercial), freiberuflich activity is not subject to Gewerbesteuer in Germany.
