fahren

drive

verb FAH-ren Common

Also means

travel

Usage Note

fahren covers moving by vehicle, both as a driver and a passenger, unlike gehen which is going on foot. It forms its perfect with sein when intransitive (ich bin gefahren) but with haben when you drive something (ich habe das Auto gefahren). The vowel changes in the present: du fährst, er fährt.

Examples

"Wir fahren mit dem Zug nach Berlin."

Natural Translation

We're travelling to Berlin by train.

Literal Translation

We drive with the train to Berlin.
