Usage Note
es is the neuter subject/object pronoun but also a dummy subject for weather and impersonal verbs, as in es regnet ('it's raining') and es gibt ('there is/are'). It can hold first position to delay the real subject. Remember it refers to any das-noun, including das Mädchen ('the girl').
