einerseits

on one hand

adverb Y-ner-zyts Less Common

Usage Note

einerseits almost always pairs with andererseits ('on the other hand') to weigh two sides of an argument. Used alone it sounds incomplete, leaving the listener waiting for the contrast.

Examples

"Einerseits will ich, andererseits nicht."

Natural Translation

On one hand I want to, on the other I don't.

Literal Translation

On-one-hand want I, on-the-other not.
