Usage Note
Volksinitiative is a direct democratic instrument in several German Länder (not at federal level). A sufficient number of signatures forces parliament to debate the proposal. A successful Volksinitiative can lead to the more demanding Volksbegehren. Plural: Volksinitiativen.
