Usage Note

Vereidigung is the formal ceremony at which soldiers, officials, or witnesses swear an oath. For Bundeswehr recruits, a public Gelöbnis (pledge) is politically significant, sometimes held in front of the Reichstag. Vereidigung implies a legally binding oath.
