Usage Note

Schutzklausel is a contractual or treaty clause allowing a party to suspend normal obligations under exceptional circumstances (e.g. economic crisis). In EU trade agreements and WTO law, Schutzklauseln permit temporary import restrictions when domestic industries are seriously threatened.
