Polizist is the everyday word for a uniformed police officer. The formal term is Polizeibeamter. Feminine: Polizistin. In Germany, police is primarily a Ländersache (state responsibility). Polizist is somewhat informal; official job titles use rank designations (Polizeiobermeister, etc.).
