Usage Note
Neid is the desire to have what another person possesses, distinct from Eifersucht (jealousy in relationships). Neid erregen (to arouse envy) is a common construction. The adjective is neidisch.

Natural Translation
Envy of his colleagues' success gnawed at him, though he didn't want to admit it.
Literal Translation
