Usage Note

Nachhilfe is private extra tuition given to a struggling pupil outside regular lessons. The literal sense is 'after-help'. A student nimmt Nachhilfe (takes tutoring) or gibt Nachhilfe (gives it). The tutor is a Nachhilfelehrer. It is normally used in the singular.
