Matrose is the basic rank of an enlisted sailor on a merchant or naval ship. In the German Navy (Deutsche Marine) it is the lowest enlisted rank. Feminine: Matrosin. Colloquially the word evokes the striped uniform (Matrosenanzug), a traditional children's fashion item.
