Kapern (always plural in German culinary use) are the pickled buds of the caper bush, used to add a pungent, briny flavour to fish dishes, Remoulade, Tatar (beef tartare), and pasta sauces. Kapernäpfel (caper berries) are the larger fruit of the same plant.
