Abtei

abbey

noun ap-TY Rare

Origin: from Latin via Old French

Usage Note

Abtei is a monastery or convent headed by an Abt (abbot) or Äbtissin (abbess). German has many famous former Abteien — such as Kloster Maulbronn — that are now tourist sites. Distinguish from Kloster, which is the more general term for any monastery.

Examples

Natural Translation

The medieval abbey stands on a hill above the town.

Literal Translation

The medieval abbey lies on a hill above-the town.
