Abschnitt is a section of a text, a stretch of road, or a phase of life (ein neuer Lebensabschnitt). It comes from abschneiden ('to cut off'), so think of a piece cut from a larger whole. The detachable stub of a ticket or coupon is also an Abschnitt.
